In the case of a booking request we check availability with the supplier before we process payment of the deposit from your credit card. If the vehicle is available, we will confirm the booking and process payment of the deposit.

  • Once the vehicle is booked with the supplier we send you a confirmation email with a travel voucher and the Terms and Conditions attached.

How much do I pay when collecting the vehicle?

  • As per your quote, the remainder of the vehicle hire plus any extras you have selected, as well as the bond amount, are payable on vehicle collection to the supplier.
  • The bond will be processed as a separate transaction, because it is refundable.

Can I pay in cash?

The supplier does not accept cash. Payment is by credit card only. The supplier accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards.

What are Calendar Days?

Top of page

Campervan and motorhome rentals are based on calendar days in New Zealand.

A motorhome hire based on calendar days means that the day of pickup and return are each counted as a day of rental, regardless of actual pick-up and drop-off times.

This means that a rental from 05 to 15 December would be calculated as 11 days' rental, regardless of the pick-up and drop-off times. In other words, the first day of rental is counted as day one, the second day of rental is day two, etc.

What are the cancellation fees?

Please refer to our Conditions page for details on cancellation fees.

What are the driver's licence and age requirements to hire a Campervan in New Zealand?

Top of page

All drivers must be 21 years and over and hold a valid, current and full (i.e. non-provisional) car driver’s licence.

Exceptions:

Hippie Camper: The minimum driver age is 18 years. In New Zealand, all drivers must have a full licence, even if they are under 21.

All licences must be in English. If the licence is not in English, either an international driver's licence or a certified translation must accompany the original licence.

International customers will be asked to show their passports as a form of identification.

Can I do a relocation if I am under 21?

To do a relocation the registered driver must be at least 21 years of age. This applies to relocations of Hippie Camper vehicles.

What is the liability?

Top of page

The Liability is the amount of money that you are responsible for if the vehicle or any third party property is damaged while on hire. This is regardless of who actually causes the damage. The level of liability is payable as a bond on vehicle collection.

If the liability for your vehicle is NZ$7500 and you have chosen standard liability, if you are involved in an accident (regardless of whether you are at fault or not), you would be liable for up to the first $7500 worth of damage.

The rental companies offer a number of reduction options to reduce this liability. The amount of liability reduction that you take determines the amount of your bond.

More information on each company's liability reduction packages are available in their Terms and Conditions, which are attached to each quote.

What are Flex Rates?

Top of page

Flex rates are based on a simple system of supply and demand. So when there are a large number of vehicles available for hire from a particular branch, then the rental rate is lower (and vice versa).

Flex rates are released each week. The rates can therefore change from one week to the next, depending on the movement of vehicles between branches. To secure the current rate, the quote has to be confirmed by midnight on Sunday (Australian time). After Sunday, the rate may change for the coming week. (We cannot offer flex rates that were displayed weeks or months ago). Your quote will only be valid for the current week, within the validity of the quote.

How can I estimate fuel costs?

Top of page

Campervans and motorhomes either use unleaded petrol (gasoline) or diesel. Petrol and diesel fuel costs per litre vary and can be high in regional areas of New Zealand.

In New Zealand, petrol prices are available through AA Petrol Watch.

Fuel consumption for each vehicle offered by our suppliers is listed under the vehicle specifications.

Should I have my own Travel Insurance?

Top of page

We recommend you take out your own Personal Injury Travel Insurance. The options to reduce the Liability on the rental vehicle do not include cover for personal injury or loss of personal belongings.

Some clients may wish to use their own travel insurance (for example, through their credit card company) to cover the Liability on the rental vehicle. If you have insurance from another source, the rental companies will still require you to cover their Liability (e.g. NZ$7500 depending on the vehicle) up front. This is because the insurance cover is between you and the independent source, not the rental company and the insurer.

What should I know about the bond and refund of the bond?

Top of page

The bond can only be paid by credit card. If the vehicle is returned safely and as agreed with the supplier, the bond amount will be refunded. The refund can take up to 15 working days.

If the vehicle is damaged in any way (regardless of who is at fault), you will be liable for the first $7500 worth of damage. You can claim these expenses back from your insurance provider or broker independently. Please check with your insurance broker to ensure that they cover campervans and motorhomes.

How do I estimate travelling distances?

Top of page

We recommend that you research your intended travel route thoroughly, particularly your travelling distances. It’s a holiday, and will enjoy your trip in your campervan more if you travel at a leisurely pace and visit the attractions of the country of travel, rather than driving long distances. As a guide, aim to cover 150 - 250 kilometres per day to experience the country of travel in comfort.
